I’m thrilled to welcome my fellow romance addict and Montlake author, Marina Adair! She’ll also be giving away a signed ARC of her latest book. But first, let’s find out why Marina LOVES romance…
I am a self-admitted, life-long romance-a-holic—an addiction that started well before I could even read. Growing up with a movie-buff for a mother and a live-in grandmother who had a thing for game shows and musicals meant that instead watching the Smurfs or The Facts of Life I was spoon-fed The Newlywed Game and movie classics. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers led me to Sabrina which led me to romantic comedies like French Kiss, You’ve got Mail, and Never Been Kissed. What gets me every time is the quirky heroine who is working toward accomplishing her dream when she suddenly finds herself in an awkward and embarrassing situation at the precise moment she meets her true love–only to be forced to choose between her perceived road to happiness and happily ever after. Contemporary romance and romantic comedies have a lot in common, which is why I think that, although I love all kinds of romance novels, I am drawn to reading and writing small town contemporaries.
To me, the whole point of romance novels is to watch two people, who are perfect for each other, be kept apart by some insurmountable obstacle—which of course they find a way to conqueror. I love when the hero and heroine’s goals clash, creating that battle between panty-melting attraction and conflicting motivations, which builds the sexual tension and makes the hero and heroine have to work really hard to find their HEA. And when it is played out in front of the entire town and all of its busy-bodies it is even better.
S – Marina, you are my kind of gal! I luuuuurve Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. And anything with a quirky heroine and a love story… GET ON MY DVR!!! I’m so addicted to holiday romance movies right now. :-)
1. What’s your favorite romantic movie?
My favorite…as in singular? A top ten list would even be a stretch. Okay, here we go…
Billy Wilder’s The Major and the Minor with Ginger Rogers and Ray Milland is quite possibly the best mistaken-identity romance movie ever! I watched this movie so many times growing up that the VHS tape broke. Then there is Only You, starring Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr. I mean fated love, intertwined destiny, Italy, what’s not to love? And finally Emma, (I had to get in a Jane Austin adaptation) with Gweneth Paltrow and the dashing and sexy Jeremy Northam. Is he not the perfect Mr. Knightley?
S – Oh, my, I do love Emma AND Jeremy Northam. (Fans self.) I have adored him ever since that movie came out. He was just so…dreamy!
2. What’s your favorite couple in history (real or fictional)?
Julie Garwood’s Madelyne and Duncan from Honor’s Splendor. What makes this story so incredible is the way Garwood builds the connection and sexual tension between the characters, it is slow and surprising and the way they overcome the major (no spoilers, I promise) obstacles and find love is utterly irresistible.
3. What’s your favorite romantic getaway?
The Hacienda in Jolon, California. In the 20’s William Randolph Hearst used it as his hunting lodge to entertain Hollywood’s royalty. My hubby and I always stay in the tower room or the suite where Clark Gable or Spencer Tracy would have slept during their visits. Hearst sold the Hacienda, and all the surrounding land, to the government in the 30’s and it now works as a boutique hotel open to the public, but sits in the middle of Fort Hunter-Liggett, a working US ARMY base. The best part: no internet, no cell reception, and nothing but miles of rolling hills.
S – Now that sounds absolutely dreamy!
And thanks for joining me Marina! By the way, I love your cover! Looks just like my favorite romantic holiday movies. :-)
For all my lovely readers, Marina will be giving away a signed ARC (Advanced Reading Copy) of her upcoming release Kissing Under the Mistletoe. Just leave a comment telling us what your favorite romantic holiday movie is for your chance to win.
(Sorry, but the giveaway is open to US residents only.)
