Ed Harris vs. Aragorn

This week’s Writer Wednesday guest is another fabulous Montlake (and indie) author, Norah Wilson. But I didn’t meet her through Montlake. I met her over a year ago through an online writer group and we’ve been friends and super-fans of each other ever since! I asked Norah the question: Why do you love romance?

I am a life-long romance reader, having started reading my mother’s tame Harlequins long before I perhaps should have been. There was always something so comforting about them. No matter the challenges (or should I say the misunderstandings? I seem to remember a lot of them!), no matter how arrogant or bull-headed the hero (I remember a lot of them too!), the heroine always managed to set him straight, after which they got their happy ending. A lot has changed about romance since those days, including the level and nature of the conflict. Heck, these days, the H&h might not even be the same species. But much remains the same, including the work and/or sacrifice required for the couple to earn their happily ever after.

I especially love romantic suspense and paranormal romance. I know there’s not necessarily a lot of cross-over readership between the two genres, but I think they have a lot in common. Exciting external plots, big conflict, high stakes, big, bad, dangerous heroes who are thrillingly competent (whether that be with guns or fangs), and heroines who are strong, smart and resourceful. Maybe that’s why I write both subgenres!

What’s your favorite romantic movie?

Oh, what an evil question! How could I pick just one? Okay, with apologies to Last of the Mohicans, Say Anything and Truly, Madly, Deeply, and LA Confidential, I have to say The Abyss. And yes, I do realize it’s a sci-fi. Released in 1989 and directed by James Cameron, it has a fabulous love story with sacrifices on a scale that elevate it to #1 for me. It also has Ed Harris. ,-)

S: And who doesn’t love Ed Harris? :-)

Who is the most romantic couple in history (real or fictional)?

I’m going to say Aragorn and Arwen (played by  Liv Tyler and Viggo Mortensen), from Lord of the Rings. Hey, she traded eternity for him.

S: That was soooo romantic. <sigh> And also Viggo is hot. Did I say that out loud?

And what’s your idea of a romantic getaway?

I live in a very small city. Maybe that’s why I think the perfect romantic getaway would involve a gorgeous big city with lots of culture and color, great cuisine, and a very good hotel. I want some luxury/indulgence with my romance. Of course, I’d probably be ready to go home to my quiet life after a few days.

Thanks for having me, Shéa! It was a blast. Even if you did make me choose Ed Harris over Daniel Day-Lewis, John Cusack, Alan Rickman and Russell Crowe.

Thanks so much, Norah, for joining me and my readers on this little adventure into romance!

Ya’ll can find Norah’s fabulous romantic suspense Every Breath She Takes over on Amazon.

Veterinarian Lauren Townsend has good reason for hiding her psychic ability. Not only did her “freakishness” earn her pariah status in the small town where she grew up, it cost her a fiancé and her faith in love. When Lauren foresees a murder—through the killer’s eyes—she traces the victim to a sprawling ranch, never guessing what waits for her…

Cal Taggart’s rugged ranch life doesn’t need any more complications. His stubborn determination cost him his marriage, and now may cost him his livelihood. But then beautiful Lauren enters his corral…with danger close behind. And Cal wants nothing more than to protect her. They can’t deny their intense attraction. Nor do they want to. What begins as a fling with no strings becomes a fight for survival—and for true love.

Now doesn’t that sound tasty? :-)

  1. Loved the interview today. So fun! How to narrow down a favorite leading man? Not sure that is a fair question! However I do love Aragorn (and Viggo is hot!) and not from the movies but TV is Neal Caffery from the USA series “White Collar” he is also very yummy!

    1. I haven’t seen White Collar yet, but I hear good things. Another show to check out. :) And you know, if I was thinking television, there’s always Michael and Fi from Burn Notice…

      1. Yes, Michael and Fi are great. Can’t wait for the 2-hour premier in a few weeks! Although it took me a long time to get over the prick of a character he played in “Hitch”. For some reason other roles they have played, plays into my decision on good leading men.

Although for fun we should also probably throw Matthew McConaughey into the mix!

  2. Hi, Nora. Hi Shéa. I’ll take either of those two guys in a pinch. Or Johnny Depp. Or Captain Kirk. And has anyone caught Dylan Dermott running around shirtless on American Horror? He’s quite the hottie. But my husband is the cutest of all, and is always my first choice.

    1. Oh, yex, Roxy! I developed a whole new appreciation for Dylan after American Horror Story. Speaking of which, I am loving how the old cast is rockin’ the new show. What a fantastic idea! (BTW, I read your Touch of a Stranger and tweeted about it last week.)

  3. Hello all! I also fell in love with Aragorn, many years ago, in the books. Enjoyed today’s post and am excited to meet a new author. Thanks Shea,

  4. I can’t believe there are others out there who think of Last of the Mohicans as a romantic movie! I thought I was the only one who found that kiss between Hawkeye and Cora to be one of the most erotic, most romantic kisses in the history of cinema. So, they are in contention for the most romantic couple, too, although Aragorn and Arwyn are right up there.

  5. Great interview, ladies!
My favorite leading man? Hmmmmm. There’s Daniel Craig, our newest James Bond. He also did a wonderful job in Cowboys and Aliens. And of course, there’s Harrison Ford. He might be a bit crusty, but who wouldn’t want Indiana Jones–crust and all?
Best of luck with your sales, Norah!

  6. I agree with Stephanie…not a fair question as there are so many hotties out there. I like Ed Harris and Viggo also. However, the accent factor has Sean Connery leading my list. Even though he is older he is still hot.
